Seed Potato Certification
The introduction of certification to the seed Industry in New Zealand has had the result of building up an ever increasing demand for New Zealand’s high quality seeds overseas. Potatoes unfortunately had not benefited to the same extent as grasses and clover. However, internally the use of certified seed has in some cases doubled the yield and generally reduced production costs a ton. Improving the Herd There are several factors to be kept in mind by the dairy farmer when entering upon the difficult task of separating the “sheep from the goats.” If he is overstocked and is reducing his herd in the reasonable hope of increasing the yield per cow, then the problem is not so hard. If he has a promising bevy of well-bred heifers coming forward, it is not every wellbred heifer that proves a good producer. If, however, he has a large number of culls, and a small number of heifers then the matter becomes serious. It is often better to stick to the cattle he knows than to risk buying those he is justified in feeling uneasy about.
