BOXING
TO-MORROW’S CONTEST Final training operations have been completed by the contestants in tomorrow night’s New Zealand championship contest. George Allan, the present title holder, arrived yesterday, accompanied by his trainer, Mr J. Summers, The visitor indulged in light training in the afternoon and appears to be in excellent form. Cliff Hanham completed his training at Waimate last evening, and his display against Doug. Eddington and Wesley Jack pleased a large attendance of spectators. Both contestants will have no trouble in making the middle-weight limit. The New Zealand Boxing Council has confirmed the appointments of the officials to control the championship contest. The referee will be Mr E. J. Pocock (Christchurch) He is an exCanterbury heavy-weight champion and competed at Timaru seven years ago. As a referee Mr Pocock has controlled all professional bouts held in Christchurch in recent years. The judges will be Messrs A. H. Curtayne (Wellington) and H. D. Johnston (Ashburton). The former was chairman of the Wellington Boxing Association for many years and also refereed and judged both in professional and New Zealand amateur contests. Mr Johnston is the well-known Ashburton referee and judge. The local association is to be complimented on its sporting action in securing the services of outside controlling officials for a championship bout, in which a local boxer is taking part. The association has decided that country patrons coming in parties will be admitted at 7.45.
