Bright Game at Anzac Square Fraser Cup Final The final of the Fraser Cup was 1 played on Anzac Square on Saturday , between Pirates and Northern. The ground was in good order, and overhead conditions were favourable, with a complete absence of wind and sun. Northern won the toss and the Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy) kicked oil. A smart run by G. Denley, the Pirates right wing, carried play into Northern territory, F. Stack relieving with a high kick and returning the ball to midfield. Pirates resumed the attack. Nicol secured inside the penalty area and opened the score, Wynne, the Northern ’keeper making a great attempt to re~ch the ball. Pressed by Northern's front rank, Weston conceded a corner, Thompson heading a well placed bail by F. Stack over the cross-bar. Two free-kicks to Northern were cleared by DeLatour, and shortly afterward both Johnman and Ramage drove over the goal-line. A cross by Cowles on Northern's left should have been turned into the net, the Northern front rank missing badly from close in. DeLatour was again prominent in saving from a corner kick. At halftime the score was Pirates 1, Northern 0. Northern made the first attack, keeping possession from the kick-off. Pirates had a narrow escape, DeLatour leaving the goal to field a loose ball. The situation was saved by Jeffreys falling back and clearing to midfield. Thomas dribbled well, and after a solo run tested Wynne, the Northern keeper proving safe. Dods made an opening and a dribbling rush by Northern’s front rank resulted in a corner. Offside helped Pirates to clear, Weston showing good form. Dods had a shot at goal, DeLatour saving with no time to spare. Northern kept up the pressure, Ramage and Johnmau shooting past. Platt fed the Northern towards with well turned passes, and a complete understanding between the Northern backs dealt effectively when Jefferys placed the ball to his front line men. Thompson, the Northern right winger, was showing a great improvement on his play in comparison with his efforts during the first spell. A free kick to Northern taken by W. Stack and partly saved by DeLatour resulted in Stack equalising the score. A second goal to Northern was added by Johnman, from a cross by Thompson. Northern added two more goals in quick successive. Dods beating De Latour with a high shot and Ramage securing in a good position from a rebound off the cross-bar, making the final score:—Northern 4, Pirates 1. The game was controlled by Mr W. Roundhill. Old Players’ Game The match between officials for the season 1938, and past players resulted in a draw, each side scoring two goals, Fitzgerald and R. Taylor sharing the scoring honours.
