BASKETBALL
TOREPE CUP MATCH Because Orari Bridge forfeited the match for the Torepe Basketball Cup, which was to have been played on Saturday, Seadown become the winners of the trophy for this season. The match, which is an annual one and which is played under the auspices of the Temuka and District Basketball Sub-Association, is governed by conditions attached to the trophy, which set out that the game shall be between the winners and the runnersup of the grade in which the Maori team Is playing. This year the Maori players have been competing the second grade and as Seadown and Orari Bridge have winners and runners-up respectively in this grade they automatically became contenders for the cup. Unfortunately Orari Bridge could not field its team on account of illness and Seadown again become the winners. Tire trophy was presented to Seadown by the donor, Mrs P. Torepe, at a function at the Maori Hall. Mrs B. Solomon, secretary of the Huirapa Glee Club, who presided in the absence of the club's president, extended a welcome to the visitors. In presenting the cup, Mrs Torepe congratulated Seadown on Its win. The cup, she said, had been given to foster /a spirit of good will among basketball teams. Miss J. Hedley, captain of the Seadown team, said that all the Seadown players had enjoyed the games. Before the presentation there was a friendly match between Seadown and Huirapa Glee, the former winning by 18 goals to six. Mrs L. Templeton was referee.
