WAIMATE R.S.A.
ANNUAL BALL SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION The Olympia Hall presented a gay spectacle when the Waimate branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association held its annual ball. There was an attendance of about 200 couples. The hall was decorated with draped streamers of red, white and blue, and with festoons of multi-coloured balloons. Bunches of ever-greens and palms adorned the walls. The grand march was led off by the president, Mr W. Barry and Mrs Barry. Other members of the committee present were the secretary, Mr d’A. Grut and Mrs Grut, who was wearing wine satin, Mr Hoskins, of St. Andrews and Mrs Hoskins (black georgette), and Mr M. J. Friel and Mrs Friel (black velvet). Music was supplied by a Waimate orchestra with extras by Miss A. Paterson and Mr B. R. Bunz. Two songs were contributed by Mr S. Smith. The winners of the novelty dances were as follows: Monte Carlo foxtrot, Mrs Hill and Mrs W. Peck; lucky spot one-step, Mr Morriss and partner; Monte Carlo waltz, Miss B. Adams and Mr R. Kennard. Mr B. R. Bunz assisted by Mr K. Hollamby, was M.C.

Saunders, E. O’Neill 78; J. Barrar 77, J. O’Neill senr. 76, F. Henshaw, J. Kavanagh 75; G. Henderson 74; J. Butters 71, B. Hathway 60. The button was won by J. Weir and the trophy by G. Henderson. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE WILLOWBRIDGE Mrs W, J. Fletcher presided at the August meeting of the Willowbridge Women’s Institute. Mrs S. J. Richmond gave a comprehensive report of the conference in Wellington and was accorded a vote cf thanks. A sub-committee was appointed to deal with the Bay at the Waimate A. and P. Show. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs K. Paterson in the death of her aunt. During the afternoon a “mad-hatters parade” was he’d. Mrs W. Smith proved the winner of the prize given by Mrs Cox. Competitions resulted as follow: Specimen bloom: Mrs S. Cox, Mrs W. Smith and Mrs W. Fletcher (equal) 2; vase of violets: Mrs W. Smith 1, Mrs S. J. Richmond 2. Hyacinths grown in fibre: Mrs S. J. Richmond 1, Mrs W. T. Richmond 2, Mrs S. Cox 3. Jars of strawberry and apricot jam: Mrs V/. Richmond 1, Mrs W. Smith 2, Mrs S. J. Richmond 3. Quilted cushion: Miss A. Faulkner 11. There was a fair attendance at the annual concert held under the auspices of the Institute. The programme was as follows: Overture, Waimate Pipe Band; pianoforte solo, Miss A. Faulkner; song, Mr J. Borthwick; Highland dance, Misses Roberts; humorous recitation, Mrs J. Tumaru; Irish jig, Miss M. Moir; selection by Pipe Band; song, Mr Peter Hunter; sword dance, Misses Roberts; humorous recitation, Mrs J. Tumaru; sailors hornpipe, Miss M. Moir; selection, Waimate Pipe Band; one-act play by members of the Morven Play Reading Circle. Mrs Max Hayman accompanied the singers and Mr A. Cooper played the pipes for the dancing. After supper the floor was cleared for dancing, music being supplied by Mr H. Davis. Mr A. Cooper contributed extras on the pipes. PERSONAL Miss Judith Bradshaw, Waimate, is spending a holiday in Christchurch. Non-mcmbers of the Farmers’ Union will be given an opportunity of discussing the guaranteed price and the economic position of the farmer generally at a meeting to be held in the Foresters’ c Hall, Waimate, at 8 p.m. on Wednesday next. "Procter’s,” the Opticians, Christchurch, will be making their next professional visit to Waimate on Wednesday and Thursday, 12tfi. and 13th October, when they may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Royal Hotel Appointments can now be made by ringing the Royal Hotel, ’nhone 15. ..
