QUEEN HONOURED

PRESENTATION BY DOMAIN BOARD To honour Miss Dorothy Laurenson, who was the candidate of the Temuka Domain Board in the recent Queen Carnival, members of the Board, the candidates’ committee, and friends met in the Fire Brigade Hall on Saturday evening. Mr A. W. Buzan, chairman of the Board, presided. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayoress, Mrs A. W. Buzan, and Mr W. F. Evans. Mr Buzan said that when the Domain Board desired a candidate for the

Queen Carnival some months ago, Miss Laurenson had generously come forward. Although the Board had not been successful in putting her to the top, she had taken the defeat in a sporting manner. She had represented the Board well and they had been proud to have her. In asking Mrs W. H. McMillan, wife of the Deputy-Mayor, to present Miss Laurenson with a gold wristlet watch, Mr Buzan said he hoped she would always retain the gift as a happy reminder of the time when she stood as the Domain Board queen. Replying for his grand-daughter, Mr James Burns thanked the Board for the present, which he assured them she would always appreciate. If on any future occasion her services were required to assist the Domain Board she would always be willing to help. Before the presentation card games were played, the winners in these being Mrs J. B. Davis and Mr A. W. Buzan. Present were: The Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan), Mr and Mrs W. H. McMillan, Mr and Mrs J. B. Davis, Mr and Mrs L. Robins, Mr and Mrs F. Mitchell, Mr and Mrs F. M. Based on the superb whimsy of the screen play, adapted

from Thorne Smith’s sensational novel, “Topper,” the brilliant talent of the principals provided uproarious fun and fast-moving action from the opening scene until the final fade out. Constance Bennett and Cary Grant are presented as delightfully gay but rollicking madcap ghosts who involve Roland Young in astounding adventures and ribald escapades in their conception of doing a “good deed” in changing the normal life of a sedate bank president in order that they can escape a spiritual prison. Billie Burke, Alan Mowbray, Eugene Pallette and others give admirable support to the co-stars. The deft direction of Norman Z. McLeod, the beautiful photography by Nobert Brodine and the amazing special camera effects by Roy Seawright combine to make “Topper” one of the season’s entertainment treats.
