GERALDINE ARBOR DAY

OBSERVANCE IN THE BOROUGH COUNCIL AND SCHOOL COMBINE In discussing the arrangements for the observance of Arbor Day (which this year will be held on Wednesday, August 3) at the monthly meeting of the Geraldine Borough Council, Cr. P. H. Davis mentioned that Cr. Z. O. Sherratt had suggested that the Council should grant the Geraldine District High School the use of the Darby Street reserve for a school plantation on the lines of that conducted by the Winchester School on a Geraldine County Council reserve at Winchester. The Mayor (Mr J. R. Lack) agreed that the suggestion was a good one, but remarked that the question would arise as to who would own the trees, the Council or the Geraldine District High School Committee, when they came to full growth. However, the matter was one which could be investigated. The Council agreed that, as there were no funds available with which to purchase trees, they would attend any function arranged by the school. At the monthly meeting of the Geraldine District High School Committee, the headmaster (Mr J. J. McGuigan) intimated that he had six trees which it was proposed to plant near the primary department jubilee commemorative gates. Mr E. P. S. Bennett expressed the

opinion that a few trees should be planted each Arbor Day. The chairman (Mr A. M. Fyfe) mentioned that he thought the Geraldine Borough Council had something more comprehensive in mind for next year. The committee agreed to invite the Mayor and councillors to attend the Arbor Day celebrations at the school, and it was also decided to ask the Council for the services of the Domain curator (Mr H. Coombes) for the afternoon. Appreciative reference was made to the gift of bulbs by Mr G. W. Coombs, and the secretary (Mr F. E. Whiteley) was instructed to write conveying the thanks of the committee to Mr Coombs.

SEXTON FOR 22 YEARS MR G. DICKENS RESIGNS After 22 years as sexton to the Geraldine Cemetery Board, Mr George Dickens has relinquished his duties owing to advancing years, and his son, Mr R. Dickens, has been appointed to the position. In order to express their appreciation of the long and faithful services rendered by Mr George Dickens, the Mayor, Mr J. R. Lack; the DeputyMayor, Mr A. J. Bell; and the town clerk (Mr C. L. Kirby) waited on him to convey their regret at his resignation and a hope that he would greatly enjoy his well-earned retirement. The Mayor presented a testimonial, bearing the Geraldine Borough Council seal and the signatures of the Mayor and councillors and the town clerk, which read as follows: “The Geraldine Cemetery Board has received your letter in which you stated that you desired to be relieved of your duties as sexton, and it has been decided with regret that your resignation be accepted. “It is realised that on account of advancing years, you are no longer able to carry out the duties required, but you must have considerable satisfaction in the knowledge that the position which you have so creditably fulfilled for over 22 years, has been taken over by your son. “The Council extends to you on your retirement its best wishes that you may be long spared to enjoy your well-earned rest.”

SCHOOL FUEL SUPPLY THEFT SUSPECTED The suspected theft of wood and coke from the primary department fuel shed was mentioned at the monthly meeting of the Geraldine District High School Ccmmittee, when Mr D. Pringle reported that the lock on the shed door had been found broken. Several members asked whether anything was missing, and Mr E. P. S. Bennett remarked that he was satisfied that all the wood and coke in the

shed had not been burnt in the school. Other members agreed that it was doubtful if the school had burnt all • the fuel which had apparently been used. It was decided to replace the lock and to report the matter for police investigation if any further trouble occurred.
