BUTCHERS’ STRIKE
REFUSAL TO ACCEPT ADJUSTMENT United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received July 15, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 15 A meeting of the Meat Employees Union decided to continue the strike of mutton slaughtermen at the Homebush abattoirs, where the men have refused to accept an adjustment to their working hours, and it was arranged that if volunteers were engaged the beef slaughtermen should stop work immediately. There will be a mutton famine in Sydney at the week-end. The prices of meat have risen 25 per cent. Conference of Parties Called The Government intervened this evening in the strike, by calling a compulsory conference of the parties. The State Cabinet discussed the trouble to-day and decided to take no action over the week-end, which would be likely to “add fuel to the fire,” uc in the event of the strike continuing. Cabinet will evolve a plan to keep the metropolis well supplied with meat. Meanwhile prices for stored meat arc soaring, and such substitutes as rabbits and fish are being snapped up at abnormal prices.
