(WARMER TONES USED
I I MELLOW COLOURS FOR LAMPSHADES I White lamp shades are going out and a warmer, more mellow colour is coming in. It seems that the pure white shades, when lighted, give out a somewhat grey tone, while many homes are enhanced by a warmer glow and need something cheerier than white. The newest colours in silk shades, as their names indicate, send out a warmer and richer light. They are—sand, gold, banana, and champagne. These come in various materials—shantung, plain silk, coarse linen, satin, crepe. Manufacturers have looked everywhere for their fabrics—to women's dress departments, draperies, upholstery materials and even the clothing industry. Much stress has been laid on washable fabrics for lamp shades and it is claimed that many of the new ones can be washed satisfactorily in soap and water. However, for the first few times at least, dry cleaning would probably be safer. Floor lamps which usually measure about 63 inches from the floor are made in shorter heights for certain purposes in the home. Some of these are called “juniors” and stand about 54 inches high. Others introduced this year are called “companion” lamps, are sold in pairs for the two ends of the sofa and are from 54 to 58 inches high. The old bridge lamp is pretty well replaced by the arm study model. This has an adjustable arm which slides up or down on the standard and also swings around. Bases of
floor lamps in bronze and gold finishes are far more popular this season than last. Others are finished in Swedish silver, copper and various other metals.
