BAN ON SMOKING
CONDITIONS OF WILL Cigarette-smoking by women and girls to whom she left money was banned in the will of Miss Annie Faulder, of Buxton, England, who died last October. She declared that “every bequest in her will to any person of the female sex was made upon the condition that the person benefitting should not have contracted the habit of cigar-ette-smoking.” There were seven women beneficiaries, six of whom declared they had never smoked. The seventh said she had smoked once. A judge was asked to decide if the condition was valid and if he was satisfied that the beneficiaries had not contracted the habit. He stated that in his opinion the condition applied only up to the death of the testatrix. The beneficiaries may thus, if they care to, now contract the smoking habit without incurring the loss of their legacies.
SOME DESTRUCTIVE TYPES An ambition to cure women of “cattiness” is claimed by Mrs Clare Luce, the New York dramatist, who, from “The Women,” her play without men 1 characters, earned £50,000 on Broadi way, plus £25,000 film rights. Mrs ! Luce was told that the play would be I passed if she made certain changes, ! but nothing would induce her to make 1 such changes as would jeopardise the • fundamental idea, which was to show i how destructive certain types of women i could be. I The chief character, Mrs Luce declared, was a portrait from contempor- ' ary Manhattan life. If most of her ■ characters were unpleasant it was only i because women themselves were often so touchy, spineless and self-centred | Mrs Luce is the wife of Mr Henry Luce, millionaire founder of three successful American magazines. His wife’s play has been produced .n Stockholm. Budapest, Prague and : South Africa without change. In Vienna, after a two months’ run, Hitler I had it taken off.
