THE CENTENNIAL

AUSTRALIAN INTEREST By Telegraph--Press Association AUCKLAND. July 11 An assurance that New Zealand’s interest in the centennial celebrations in Melbourne in 1934 and in the sesquicentenary of Sydney early this year, would be reciprocated by Australia when the Dominion’s centenary was held in 1940 was given by Mr H. C. Fenton, European manager of tlie Australian Travel Association, a passenger by the Aorangi, returning from London after a six weeks’ visit to the Commonwealth. The success of the Sydney celebrations had exceeded expectations, he said, and the result should be a great encouragement to those organising in New Zealand. Travel between the Dominions and Britain was increasing. Last year 28,000 visitors from overseas came to Australia, and ’in addition 12,000 new settlers. Twenty thousand Australians went to Britain Europe and other countries, including many to New Zealand in cruise liners and regular vessels. This year it is expected the number will be still higher than last year. His Association spent £30,000 attracting tourists, and estimated the amount spent by tourists in Australia was £1,700,000.
