BOROUGH COUNCIL
Committee Reports Presented Ordinary Meeting Committee reports were adopted by i the Timaru Borough Council at its ord- I inary meeting last night. Present, the | Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy), Councillors A. S. Kinsman, M. H. Richards, F. B. Hawkey, A. G. Foster, P. B. Foote. H. G. Mathers, W. H. Hall, J. S. Satterthwaite and J. R. Hart. Finance Committee The Finance Committee reported as follows.— Grants.—Authority was given for payment of the following.—Plunket Society £25. District Nurse £l5, Pipe Band £5O, Salvation Army Band £25, Chamber of Commerce Sub. £2, Sailors’ Rest £5, W.E.A. £l2, Y.M.C.A. £5, Y.W.C.A. £5, Harmonica Band £lO. Health Camp £5. George Street right-of-way, allocation of costs; of work done on right of ways, etc., in general.—The Town Clerk’s report was considered and the general method of arriving at the cost was approved. As regards George Street it was decided that the owners be informed that they must agree amongst themselves as to what method they shall adopt to contribute to the cost, and that they must deposit 50 per cent, of the estimated cost before the work is proceeded with. The report was adopted.
Works Committee The Works Committee reported as follows. — Letter was received from the Automobile Association inviting representatives of the Council to meet representatives of the Association at their rooms for a round table talk. It was suggested that they confer with the traffic inspector, and if there were any definite matters which they wished to bring under the notice of the Council, the Council would be pleased to consider them.
Report of traffic inspector relative to traffic control was held over for consideration at the next meeting, the inspector to consult the omnibus engineer in regard to buses in Stafford Street. It was decided on the motion oi Cr. Foote that the Council meet the Automobile Association in conference, the agenda to be arranged between the chairman of the Works Committee and the president of the Automobile Association.
The Mayor considered it would be proper for the Association to wait on the Council. Cr. Foote explained that the Association did not mean any disrespect in suggesting that the conference should take place at its rooms. The idea was to entertain the Council at afternoon tea and allow Councillors to inspect the club rooms. -The Mayor: I think as a matter oi policy the Council should be waited on. The report was adopted.
Reserves Committee The Reserves Committee reported as follows Spare trees.—Letter was considered from the chairman of the Community Service Committee of the Rotary Club asking if the Council would allow them to have a number oi Lombardy Poplars which the curator would not be using this season, which they propose to plant in the main road between Timaru and Pleasant Point—Resolved that the application be granted. Recommended that the suggestion ci Cr. Kinsman that the hedges in front of the two Council properties in West End Park facing Wai-iti Road be grubbed and the fence line planted with Lonicrea and thus be in keeping with the remainder of the frontage of the reserve.
Tree planting.—Resolved that the curator avail himself of the extra unemployed labour to extend his tree planting operations to include Brown Street and Maltby Avenue. The report was adopted.
