NOTHING TO STOP WORKING

MINERALS IN ANTARCTIC SIR DC i GLAS MAWSON’S COMMENT United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received July 10, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 10. Sir Douglas Mawson discounting Mr B. R. O’Brien’s statement concerning the impossibility of exploiting Antarctic minerals, said that provided reasonably rich mineral deposits were discovered in the Antarctic, there was nothing to stop them from being profitably worked.

Sir Douglas poinlted out that coal mining was in active progress in Spitzbergen, and active mining had been conducted for nearly a hundred years in Greenland. Mr O’Brien who was a member <jf Rear-Adm:’ r al Byrds second experdi-

tion to the Antarctic, when visiting Sydney from New Zealand, said that for various reasons any commc -■.al exploitation of gold, coal and other mineral deposits in the icc area was impossible. Mr O’Brien was referring to the proposal for the Federal Government to consult with the British and New Zealand Governments to see whether any purpose could be served by organising an expedition to the Antarctic.
