NOTES ON THE RACING A Good Dividend In a field of 19 for the Trial Handicap backers selected Mazamarch 562577, Bad News 295-475. Waitoru 295-399 Triple Cone 164-257 and Ardmayle 149-274. Both Bad News and Triple Cone got off badly. Straight Dell and Waitoru made all the running with Mazamarch and Sheeny fairly well placed. Sheeny challenged Straightdeli in the last furlong and in a great finish the verdict went to Straightdell by a neck from Sheeny, who beat Waitoru by a head. Ardmayle finished fast to beat Sea Lady and Mazamarch for fourth. Straightdell opened the meeting with a win dividend approaching a score.

Burwood’s First Win Burwood who had been a consistent but unlucky performer over hurdles gained the first win of his career by leading all the way in the Waiau Steeplechase. His nearest attendant all the way was Royston, who fulfilled his engagement at the express wish of the late Mr George Bain. Royston threw out a stout challenge racing to the last fence. He broke down and Burwood beat him off again. Ballybrit (carrying 54 overweight) was third and Delrain fourth. Converse appeared likely to fill third place when he came to grief at the post and rails three furlongs from home. A Hard Struggle Valmarch’s Oamaru defeat was overlooked by backers when L. J. Ellis took the mount in the Flying Handicap, and with 1121-927 he was made a hot win favourite from Viking 552-795, Acceptable 433-710 and Moneyless 331-658. Araboa got the best and Acceptable the worst of a rather scrambling start. Dissemble soon took charge from Viking and racing round the top the leaders were Dissemble, Viking, Acceptable and Rodeur with Valmarch next. Valmarch was disappointed in an attempt to get through. When Dissemble faded in the straight Viking and Rodeur were left in front a furlong from home, where Valmarch was taken to the middle of the course. A hard struggle resulted in Rodeur wearing Viking down and beating him by a neck, with Valmarch another neck away. Peony Rose and Araboa were next. Favourite Scores Silkwood 447-582, Soliad 424-475 and Coxcomb 386-555 topped the list in a well distributed pool on the Longwood Handicap. Bellerive was hopelessly left and Wonderful and Soliad got off badly. Valantua was soon in command from Thermidor and Silkwood, and round the top the leaders were Valantua, Thermidor, Silkwood, Baitruin and Foxlove. In the run home Silkwood outstayed Valantua and beat him by half a length, with Foxlove finishing well have a length away. Coxcomb came from the back and was placed fourth, just ahead of Soliad, Thermidor, Baitruin and Atalanta Lass. \ The Cup Cintjlla dropped out of the Cup and in a nice sized field of nine backers selected Paladino 1106-1112, Wild Career 860-1075, Waitaka 776-932, Amelita 446-821 and Sailing Lady 413671. Queen Dorothy and Sailing Lady were troublesome at the start, and Queen Dorothy was last to leave. Double Gift led past the stand from Waitaka and Amelita, with Paladino and Salient Knight handy and Sailing Lady bringing up the rear. There was no change at the mile. Along the back Double Gift was two lengths ahead of a bunch which included all the field except Sailing Lady. Rounding the top the leaders were Double Gift, Waitaka, Amelita, Wild Career and Paladino. A spectacular finish, ended in Wild Career winning by a neck from Double Gift, who was the same distance ahead of Amelita. Paladino and High 'Glee were only necks away. Exciting Finish Survoy 835-790, Tangled 353-522, Dunmure 390-475, Trisox 323-620 and Arctic Star 311-596 were the fancied candidates in rather mixed betting on the Great Western Steeplechase. Dunmure was leading Possum and Survoy to the board fence opposite the stand when he fell heavily. There was a sensation when Possum boxed Trisox and angled inside a flag. Trisox lost so much ground that his chance was extinguished. Racing along the back Survoy and Arctic Star were six lengths ahead of Possum. At the water jump opposite the stand Survoy was in command fro mArctic Star, Gay Boa, Possum and Tangled, but the favourite bumped his rider off at the sod wall. Possum went to the front at the back from Tangled and Arctic Star, but a faulty jump at the top cost Tangled a bit of ground. Possum and Arctic Star raced up the straight neck and neck with Tangled in hot pursuit, and in a “leave it to the judge” finish, Possum was given the verdict by half a head. Tangled was close up third with Jollyanna and Gay Boa next. N. Kitto, who rode Possum, was having his first ride in a race. He is apprenticed to J. Thistleton, and is a brother of W. T. Kitto. L. J. Ellis Has a Win L. J. Ellis’s mount Mona’s Song was made a pronounced favourite for the Visitors’ Hack Handicap, and after being well placed all the way she gave him his first win of the afternoon. Western Song dashed to the front after going two furlongs and led to the straight from Epic, Mona’s Song and Astaire. Epic stopped quickly in the run home, leaving Western Song and i Astaire in front, but Mona’s Song finished too strongly for both and won by a length and a quarter from Astaire, who defeated Western Son by a neck. Volo Dale was travelling fast in fourth place, a length away. Recall and Barley Almond both lost too much ground at the start to have any chance. By a Head Backers again pinned their faith to L. J. Ellis in the Pourakino Handicap, Linguist 1588-1104 being preferred to Viking 759-725, Surge 690-836, and Ocean Singer 678-780. Turning into the back All Humbug, Linguist and Viking were disputing the lead, but Viking and All Humbug were in sole command along the back stretch. Crossing the top Viking was followed by Grand Finale and Surge, with All Humbug and Linguist handy. Linguist came fast in the straight and appeared to head Viking, but judiciously nursed the local gelding got in another run on the post and snatched victory by a short head. Ocean Singer was about three lengths away. Viking is owned by Mr D. M. Tweedie, president of the Club, who had not won on his home course for nearly 10 years. acceptances for to-day NOVICE HANDICAP, of £150; 7 furlongs.—Ardmayle 9.0, Sheeny 8.6, Bad News 8.5, Waitoru 8.4, Bilbao 8.3, Gay Vixen 8.3, Invadere 8.2, Dalrymple 8.1, Hunting Chorus 8.1, Palastyle 8.1, Ramana 8.1, Sea Lady 8.1, Triple Cone 8.1, Turaki 8.1.
