AT RANDWICK

Nuffield Proves His Class Doncaster Won By Hamurah United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, April 17 The attendance at the Australian Jockey Club Randwick meeting yesterday was 67,000 compared with 49.600 last year. During a tussle in the straight in the Doncaster Handicap, King’s Head repeatedly tried to savage Hamurah, who otherwise probably would have won more convincingly. King’s Head’s jockey, E. Bartie, expressed the opinion that his mount would have won but for the savaging tactics. FIRST HURDLE RACE Of £500; about 2 miles Keewong, 9.2 < Brace) 1 Asolando, 9.5 (Hood) 2 Capaneus, 10.0 (Malcolm) 3 Thirteen started. Won nicely by three-quarters of a length, with half a length between second and third. Time. 3min, 41sec. Jim Ayres lost his rider. VAUCLUSE HANDICAP Of £700; 7 furlongs First Division Herarde, 9.1 (McMenamin) 1 Palarang, 8.4 (Voitre) 2 Warrawing, 8.7 (Hickey) 3 Thirteen started, including Rival Hit. Herarde prevailed by half a neck with half a head between second and third. Dubonnet was fourth and Rival Hit seventh. Time, lmin. 25i*sec. Rival Hit and Palarang were both interfered with during the. running. AUTUMN PLATE Of £1500; w.f.a.; li miles Allunga, 9.3 (Bartie) 1 Sarcherie, 9.1 (McMenamin) .. .. 2 Genetout, 9.0 (McCarthy) 3 Eleven started. The field was well bunched turning into the straight where L’Aiglon, Allunga, Sarcherie, Billy Boy, Genetout and Apollo begai} to fight out the finish. Allunga at the distance gained an advantage with Sarcherie making a strong bid, but she was not equal to overtaking Allunga. who won by half a head with Genetout a length away third. Aitchengee was fourth. Then came L’Aiglon, Donaster, Apollo and Old Rowley. Time, 2min. 311 sec. A.J.C. SIRES PRODUCE STAKES Of £3500; 7 furlongs Nuffield, 8.10 (Badger) 1 Fort Regal, 8.10 (Wilson) 2 Pandava, 8.10 (McCarten) 3 All started. Nuffield went past Pandava at the distance and won full of running by three-quarters of a length, with Pandava a head away, third. Time, lmin. 254 sec. DONCASTER HANDICAP Of £2600; 1 mile Hamurah, 7.9 (Hickey) 1 King’s Head. 8.13 (Bartie) 2 Buzalong, 8.6 (Wilson) 3 When the field turned for home there was little between King’s Head. Hamurah and Lolorua. With a furlong to go Hamurah and King's Head were still disputing the lead but Hamurah finished on best to win in the last few strides by a head. Buzalong was threeuarters of a length away third. Troy was fourth and Mark Antony fifth. Time, lmin. 37isec. A.J.C. ST. LEGER Of £1500; 1:1 miles John Wilkes. 8.10 (McCarten) .... + Cathartes, 8.10 (W. Cook) i Silenus, 8.10 (Munro) 3 All started. Cathartes and John Wilkes fought out the Issue neck and neck, the former if anything, going the better, but the judge’s verdict was a dead heat with Silenus a head away third. Bourbon was fourth. Time, 3min. 4sec. VAUCLUSE HANDICAP Of £700; 7 furlongs Second Division Tickle, 8.12 (Voitre) 1 Red Thespian, 9.2 (Heath) 2 Sedunum, 9.4 (W. Cook) 3 Thirteen started, including Kinsfolk. Red Thespian had command into the straight .where he was overtaken by Tickle who came with a paralysing run to win by a length, with three-uarters of a length between second and third. Time, lmin. 26sec. WILLIAMSTOWN RESULTS United Presss Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received April 17, 6.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, April 17 During the racing at Williamstown yesterday the course was enshrouded with a pall of dust. The Easter Stakes resulted— Sindicada, 8 2 (Elliot) 1 Beauham, 7.5 (Preston) 2 Red Manfred, 8.7 (Creighton) .... 3 Eight .started, including Prince Quex. Won by half a length, a length between second and third. Time. 2min. 9Ssec. Riddle finished third in the Werribee Handicap, which was won by Conchita. Desert Chief, Bellevue and Royal Order were unplaced. Link Devine was last in the Seaford Trial Hurdles, which was won by Great Bear. Early in the afternoon the attendance at Riverton on Saturday was proclaimed to be largely in excess of last year’s record figures, and this was confirmed by the gate receipts which totalled £1596, an increase of £3OO. The turnover of £30,003 also constituted a record for the course, and the pool of £5,558 on the Cup was a long way in advance of anything previously registered on one race. Scant regard appears to be paid to Silver Streak as a Great Easter possibility. This is probably due to stories of his lameness after his races at Oamaru last month, but this was greatly exaggerated. Soreness due to hard tracks was then the disability, and it would be very unwise to cast the plain but game and brilliant little Oronia into the discard. The fastest time credited to a Great Easter winner is 1.24 3-5, registered by Shirley in 1937 and equalled by Cimabue two years later. The Great Autumn record is 2.31, set up by Bonnie Winkie in 1922. The highest weight borne out by a Great Easter winner is Machine Gun’s 10.4, and in the Great Autumn the honour rests with Sasanof 9.13 and Warstep (a mare) 9.11.
