ST. ANDREWS ANZAC DAY
R. Arrangements Committee Meets At a meeting of the committee of the Pareora-St. Andrew's sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr C. H. S. Johnston presided. The Anzac service was arranged to be held at the Public Hall. A parade to the War Memorial will follow the service. It was decided to ask the Revs. A. McNeur and James Hay to conduct the service. Mr McNeur will be asked to give the Anzac address. Arrangements for the Salvation Army Band to be in attendance are being made. It was decided to hold the 'church service at the Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. Poppy Day was fixed for April 21. Messrs A. Lambie, A. Glassey and E. Cosgrove left over the week-end to attend the sesquincentennial celebrations of New South Wales. LAWN TENNIS ST. ANDREWS v. MAUNGATI At Maungati a friendly tennis match was played between St. Andrews and Maungati. Results (St. Andrews names first): — Men’s Singles—J. R. Trimble v. G. Dale 3-4, R. H. Rowe v. D. Neale 4-1, S. Smith v. P. Jackson 4-2, L. Galletley v. A. Cookson 4-3. Women’s Singles—Miss H. Davey v. Mrs Dent 4-1, Mrs Rowe v. Mrs Beck 4-3, Miss Eva Dash v. Miss V. Stewart 4-3, Miss W. Lister v. Miss Neale 2-4. Mixed Doubles—Miss Davey and J. R. Trimble v. Mrs Dent and D. Dale 6-0, Mrs Rowe and Rowe v. Mrs Beck and D. Neale 6-4, Miss E. Dash and S. Smith v. Miss V. Stewart and P. Jackson 6-5, Miss W. Lister and L. Galletley v. Miss Neale and A. Cookson 6-1. Men’s Doubles—J. R. Trimble and R. H. Rowe v. G. Dale and D. Neale 4-6, C. Smith and L. Galletley v. P. Jackson and A. Cookson 6-5. Women’s Doubles—Miss Davey and Mrs Rowe v. Miss Dent and Miss Beck 6-2, Miss W. Lister and Miss E. Dash v. Miss V. Stewart and Miss Neale 6-2. St. Andrews won by 13 sets to 3. DRAMATIC CLUB At the annual meeting of the St. Andrews Dramatic Club Mr W. E. Mills presided. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted without discussion. The report said that early in the year the club lost a number of members, and a membership of 12 was not deemed sufficient to produce the required number of plays to make an annual presentation a success. The resignation of Mr Alan O’Neill, who has left the district, was received with regret. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Dr. P. R. Woodhouse; president, Mr W. E. Mills; vicepresident, Mrs P. R. Woodhouse; producer, Mrs W. E. Mills; secretary and treasurer, Mr B. Hutton; committee, Mrs Bannerman, Miss D. Kane, Messrs F D. Martin, and J. Blank; auditor, Mr H. Bannerman. It was decided to carry on and produce plays. Mrs Mills was welcomed back to the club. FLORAL SOCIETY At a meeting of the Presbyterian Floral Society it was revealed that the gross income from the autumn show was £64. Mr A. Ward said the show had been a most satisfactory one. Thanks were due to the committee and all who had given support. Mr Robinson (Hunter) congratulated the show committee on its arrangements. The secretaries were asked to write letters of thanks to the judges, Mrs H. B. S. Johnstone and Mr A. S. Jones for special displays, Mrs I. T. Copland (Timaru) for a gift of flower stands, and Mi* H. B. S. Johnstone for opening the exhibition. HARVEST THANKSGIVING Harvest thanksgiving services were conducted by the Rev. James Hay (St. Andrews) at Maungati, Hunter, St. Mary’s (Upper Otaio) and St. Andrews. The produce and fruit were later conveyed to St. Saviour's Orphanage, and the flowers and grapes to the Timaru Public Hospital. At the Maungati service Miss Kay (Sunday School organiser) addressed the children. MOTHERS’ UNION A very satisfactory year was revealed at the annual meeting of the St. Andrews Mothers’ Union. The Rev. James Hay presided. The following officers were elected: Enrolling member, Mrs Hay; vice-presidents, Mrs W. Cague, Mrs J. Stowell; hon. secretary, Mrs R. B. Williams; committee, Mesdames P. R. Woodhouse, W. Moyle and P. F. Djx. PUBLIC LIBRARY At the monthly flag 500 evening In aid of the Library funds the prize Winners were Mesdames H. Bannerman, J. Cronin and Master McCarthy. One of the women’s prizes was given by Mrs P. F. Dix. A competition was won by Mr Tritt, of Fairlie. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs E. J. Bell, Christchurch, are the guests of Mr and Mrs L. R/ Bell, “Hillview,” Kohika. Mr P. Dalliessi, Masonic Hotel, returned from a holiday trip to Italy on Thursday.
