WORK FOR THE WEEK

FLOWER GARDEN Rose Mildew is very prevalent this season, the best method of control is by either dusting or spraying and several applications at intervals of a few days may be necessary where plants are badly infected. Dahlias will appreciate plenty of water during dry weather, followed by a mulch of grass clippings or strawy litter. Stake firmly and remove all surplus growth. Spring flowering bulbous plants may still be taken up and divided up if they are replanted without delay. It is not advisable to keep bulbs out of the ground for any length of time as most of them do not like to have a long resting period. Pinks are very valuable for brightening up the garden either as edgings, or ground cover under shrubs. Cuttings of young growths may now be taken and inserted in a cool shady place. The earlier the cuttings are put in the stronger the plants will be. VEGETABLE GARDEN A sowing of early peas put in now may be depended upon to produce a fair crop in the autumn. Richard Seddon or William Hurst are perhaps the most suitable. Outdoor tomatoes will require tying up and the careful removal of laterals. Now that the plants are producing fruit a dusting of nitrate of soda, nitrate of potash, or sulphate of ammonia, at the rate of an ounce or two per square yard, will be very beneficial. Shallots should be lifted if this has not already been done. They should be thoroughly dried off in a warm sunny place before being stored in a cool shed. Herbs which arc used for edging garden paths should now be trimmed back to maintain a tidy appearance. Cherry and plum trees may be pruned as soon as all the fruit has been gathered.
