FRAUD ADMITTED

RELIEF WORKER COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, January 10. Indictable proceedings were adopted in dealing with a resident of New Lynn, Glennard Ashley Parker, who was charged In the Magistrate’s Court with obtaining sustenance money and supplementary rations totalling £B6 13s 9d from the Labour Department between August, 1936, and August, 1937, by furnishing false declarations of income.

The pay-out clerk of the Auckland Stevedores Association produced cards showing the earnings of the accused. Over the period in question he received wages amounting to £136 10s Id under the name of L. Parker.

Officers administering the Employment Promotion Fund through the New Lynn Bureau produced 36 statements made by the accused when making application for sustenance. In all but one he declared his earnings to be nil, and in the other he stated his wages to have been £1 5s for the week. One of the clerks said the accused was married and had five children, four of whom were dependent on his earnings. He was entitled to receive £2 Ils a week as sustenance, and his maximum weekly earnings could not exceed £3 6s. An examination of his wages cards and sustenance payments showed that all his declarations over the period in question were false, and that he obtained £B6 13s 9d in excess of the amount to which he was entitled. A statement from the accused admitting his offence was produced. Pleading guilty, the accused said the circumstances in which he was placed at the time the false declarations were made forced him to take the steps he had taken. The accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was fixed at £lOO.
