BASIS OF LIFE
PLANS TO “SHORT-CIRCUIT NATURE” United Press Association—By ElectricTelegraph -Copyright CALCUTTA, January 9. Professor E. C. Baly, of Liverpool University, told a Science Congress that after years of research he had solved the mystery of carbo-hydrates which established the basis of all life. Carbohydrates, including certain sugars, had been produced from carbon-dioxide and water by means of a light process as photo-synthesis. The first stage was promoted by blue and the second by red light. He had made it possible to short-circuit nature and produce the essentials of plant life in the laboratory, thus eliminating the time factor in planting and reaping a crop.
This discovery means that if Great Britain were blockaded during a war the nation would not starve.
