FAIRLIE
EFFECT OF RAIN With the total fall more than three inches, rain ceased in Fairlie late on Sunday night, and a light coating of snow on the higher ranges caused a slight frost. Flood waters started to f&ll as quickly as they rose, and all roads were clear yesterday. The main routes were quickly put in order with Council gangs and the two Diesel graders. The countryside is covered with a rank growth of grass. Many crops have been ruined, and a harvest made small by the dry weather will be further reduced. For some weeks lambs have been affected with scour, and until some warm weather is experienced, that trouble will be accentuated. Many rivers and streams reached the highest levels for years. Within 17 years, the stream at Winscombe has only reached the same height once before. Mr R. Seay’s woolshed was on an island, and at one stage his homestead was threatened. The general flooding that occurred throughout the county proved the correctness of the contention that a little more rain would have caused a serious position. Farm work has been delayed considerably, and large areas for rape and turnips have still to be sown. Shearing in many cases has still to be completed, and those farmers who do not have to re-work their ground will be fortunate.
TIMARU HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS In furtherance of the campaign in connection with the Timaru Harbour improvement' loan proposal, public meetings of Mackenzie ratepayers will be addressed by Mr A. F.
