SHIELD AND CASKET GAMES CANTERBURY DEFEATS WELLINGTON By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, January 9. Holding the advantage gained on the first day, the Canterbury tennis teams on Saturday defeated Wellington in the Anthony Wilding Shield and Kathleen Nunneley Casket contests, thus repulsing the strongest challenge they are likely to receive this season. The Canterbury men retained the Shield by seven rubber to four, one doubles match being unfinished, and the women won the Casket match by eight rubber to four. Very heavy rain on Friday night necessitated the transfer of the matches to hard courts. The results of Saturday's matches were as follows: — WILDING SHIELD Singles C. Angas (Canterbury) beat N. V. Edwards (Wellington), 6-3, 6-3. H. A. Barnett (Canterbury) beat N. F. N. Bedford i Wellington >. 6-2, 2-5, 6-0. H. Dymond (Canterbury) beat E. A. Rousscll iWellington), 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. A. R. Cant (Canterbury) lost to D. G. France (Wellington), 1-6, 3-6. Doubles Barnett and Cant (Canterbury) v. France and Edwards (Wellington), 9-7, 1- (unfinished).
