NOR’-EASTER SWEEPS AUCKLAND
ACUTE DISCOMFORT By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, January 9 The seamanship of yachting crews was severely tested, unprepared holi-day-makers were either saturated or marooned indefinitely under friendly verandahs, and hundreds of campers spent the evening in acute discomfort when heavy rain accompanied by a strong north-easterly wind swept Auckland on Saturday afternoon. The storm, which was part of a westerly cyclonic disturbance, broke in the city about 4 o’clock and continued with little abatement throughout the night. Recordings taken by Dr. W. A. Macky, meteorologist at the Hobsonville air base, showed that the wind attained a maximum velocity of 40 miles,, an hour on Saturday afternoon. With reefed sails yachtsmen faced confused seas in Waitemata harbour during the afternoon, and several boats capsized. All the yachtsmen were quickly rescued.
At some of the east coast beaches torrential rain fell in the early hours of this morning, and a considerable number of campers’ tents were endangered. Clad in bathing trunks and shorts men hurriedly dug trenches to carry the water away and strengthened supports, but in a number of instances the tents collapsed. Apart from the inconvenience and discomfort and mishaps which occurred on the harbour, the damage resulting from the storm in Auckland was slight.
