CORNWELL CUP

PLIMMERTON RETAINS TROPHY By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, January 7. The Cornwell Cup was retained by Plimmerton, who won the eighth race to-day. The boats started at 9.48, and the finishing times were:— Plimmerton .. .. 10-39-13 Wellington 10-39-35 Otago 10-40-52 This morning's race, like the two races yesterday, was mainly between Plimmerton and Tauranga, and again Tauranga were unlucky, capsizing when in the lead. Plimmerton were in Wanganui’s boat. They secured three wins, Tauranga two, Auckland, Wellington, and Paremata one each. The course to-day was triangular, three times round. The wind was a moderate north-wester, which fell towards the end, and there was the usual rolling swell to seaward. Auckland, Paremata, Tauranga and Manukau all capsized. Plimmerton finished the first round 30 seconds ahead of Tauranga, with Otago next. Tauranga passed Plimmerton when Plimmerton lost the spinnaker in the next leg, and were retrieving it. Auckland and Paremata both set their spinnakers, and both capsized. Plimmerton again got the lead on the leg to leeward, but were passed on the weather leg, with Wellington in third place.

Setting out on the last round, the Tauranga boys were going well, when a squall struck them, and they went over. Plimmerton went on to win, despite a strong challenge from Wellington, on the weather leg. Manukau capsized on the last run to leeward.
