Three furlongs from home Survivor and Sphinx were just clear of Esther and Gaynor. Gallant Knight and Gunfire headed Aide de Camp after a furlong. but a little further on Llewellyn's Pride was in charge from Big Author, who was in front at the end of six furlongs. with Llewellyn’s Pride. Gallant Knight. Gunfire. Aide de Camp and Recess handy. Parisienne being a good way back, with Graham Direct last. Aide de Camp moved up fast along the back, following Llewellyn's Pride round the home turn, with Gallant Knight and. Gunfire close up. while Graham Direct and Parisienne were moving up. Big Author led Aide de Camp to the straight, but in a great finish Parisienne beat Graham Direct by half a length, with Big Author a neck away, just in front of Aide de Camp, while Bingen Palm and Gallant Knight headed the others. Tire first and second horses came home very fast.

A Good Effort When the big field settled down in the Middleton Handicap. Allworthy and. Labour man were showing the way to Llewellyn’s Pet. Waitaki Power and Intrigue, while Lucess and Loyal Pat were handy with half the journey gone. Waitaki Power than took charge, while Sports Review moved up fast along the back, being Loyal Pat and Labourman. just behind Waitaki Power, at the home turn. Loyal Pat challenged in the straight, beating Waitaki Power by half a length, while two lengths back Sports Review beat Labourman by a length. The winner put up a good effort after a fortunate passage. Waitaki Power is consistent. Sports Review did remarkably well. after tangling at the start. The win favourite, Lightning Lady, did not begin well. A Close Finish The Hornby Handicap provided a good finish. Little Reta began fast, taking the lead after two furlongs, with Kippagh. Flotsam, Garner. Golden Eagle and Fift heading the others at the end of half a mile. Ganton then moved up and starting the last round he joined Flotsam behind Little Reta, with Kippagh, Fifa and Golden Eagle next. Golden Eagle moved up along the back, following Little Reta, Flotsam and Fifa to the straight, with Captain Bolt making up ground. Flotsam then retired and Golden Eagle got up on the post to beat Little Reta by a neck. Captain Bolt, two lengths away, just beat Fifa for third. Golden Eagle trotted a great race, while Little Reta went solidly. Captain Bolt broke early and again near the finish. There was an inquiry into his later break, and Captain Bolt was disqualified. Fifa being placed third. A Decisive Win Village Guy, the favourite, lost ground at the start of the Selwyn Handicap. War Buoy had Evicus and Bingen Palm as his nearest attendants most of the way, with Reporter heading the others. Cloudy Range finished fast but though he got up to beat Evicus by a neck for second, War Buoy won decisively. Reporter failed in the last bit. The pace was very slow for the first half mile.

A Good Performance It was a high class performance that gave Southern Chief a win in the Prebbleton Handicap. Bingen Wrack made the early pace from Alpine Prince and Agility, Olive King, Great Divide, Full Hand and Bing Crosby being handy after half a mile. Along the back the last time Great Divide joined Bingen Wrack in front, with Bing Crosby a length back, followed by Alpine Prince and Agility, with Moana Tama and Southern Chief following after a gap. Then Bingen Wrack retired and Bing Crosby tired after following Great Divide to the straight. Southern Chief came home very fast, beating Great Divide by a length, while Moana Tama finished well to cut Agility out of third. Eastern Prince and Bing Crosby were next. Final Event Harlequin soon took the lead in the Final Handicap, Southern Smile beginning fast to be second after two furlongs, while Toorak, Iraq and Frisco Boy followed them for six furlongs. Harlequin and Southern Smile led to the straight but Frisco Boy came with a great rush to beat Southern Smile by half a length, with Harlequin half a length away, beating Toorak by a neck. The winner came home very solidly.

Nine starters yesterday made a satisfactory field for the resumption of hurdle racing at Invercargill. Fireguard was the win favourite, but place backers showed a slight preference for Burwood. Bonazel and Smoko led Burwood, Sir Admiral and Coat of Arms to the second fence, where Coat of Arms fell and gave E. Leckie a heavy fall. Smoko set such a hot pace that he soon had the field strung out, the order along the back being Smoko, Sir Admiral, Master Anomaly and Fire--guard. Fireguard ran up to the leader half a mile from home and beat him t/ half a length, with Master Anomaly, Sir Admiral a-.d Burwood following at intervals. Smoko made a fine showing for a novice and with riders reversed the result might have been different.
