MINOR ASSOCIATIONS’ MATCH
GOOD SCORE BY ASHBURTON A match was commenced at Ashburton on Saturday between teams representing the Ashburton and South Canterbury Associations in the Canterbury Minor Association’s competition, the winner to play West Coast at a later date. Ashburton put up the respectable total of 244, due mainly to a fine Innings by lan Hamilton, former Canterbury and New Zealand representative, who compiled 143. At stumps South Canterbury had lost three wickets for 37 runs. The wicket on the Oval at Ashburton was in good order, but the outfield was heavy, the grass being wet, necessitating the use of saw-dust throughout the day. At lunch Ashburton had lost three wickets for 73 runs, Nicoll being dismissed with the last ball before the adjournment. Hamilton was then 59. At the tea adjournment Hamilton had reached 115, and with his total at 143 he was caught by Gould off Welford.
Hamilton played a sound innings, and did not give a chance until he was 68, when Earwaker dropped a difficult running catch on the leg boundary. Later he was missed twice in one over, a stumping chance and a hot return being dropped by Rix. L. Wineham was very slow starting and when he appeared to be set Pateman took a good one-handed catch at square leg. H. Cook was at the crease for about half an hour, but had not scored when he edged one to Kane in the slips. A. Todd was forceful, hitting one six and three fours.. He was snapped up by Stack close in at mid-off. A. McCall was very patient at the start of his innings, but later brightened, and he and Hamilton put on 104 for the sixth wicket. He was caught on the boundary by Pateman. P. Harper started aggressively but was out to a brilliant catch at square-leg by Heasley. South Canterbury opened disastrously, Earwaker being bowled first ball by Biggar. Chaplin did not last long, going in the next over. Lang went soon after. Heasley and Pateman were batting confidently at stumps. Biggar was bowling the off theory, with four men in the slips, but he was a trifle erratic, bowling a few wides. Duncan bowled with a packed leg field and the batsmen found it hard to score off him. The game will be resumed to-day. Scores : ASHBURTON First Innings I. M. Hamilton, c Gould, b Welford 143 L.
