WELLINGTON v. CANTERBURY

BRIGHT KNOCK BY DONNELLY By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, January 1. Not for many years past has such effective bowling been seen on a batsman’s wicket as was revealed on the Basin Reserve on Friday when Wellington and Canterbury commenced their Plunket Shield engagement. Though conditions were all in favour of run getting, Canterbury fell for 197 against good bowling by N. Galichan, the tall Manawatu slow left hander, who captured four wickets for 47 runs off 12 overs. The feature of the innings was the stand made by Stokes and Cromb, which put on 67 for the fourth wicket. Stokes, a recruit from the Christchurch Suburban ranks, played an enterprising innings for 58, which occupied 89 minutes. McRae, Hadlee and Jacobs all got runs, but they sacrificed their wickets in attempting to force the pace against accurate bowling.

It was confidently expected that Wellington would run up a solid score, particularly as drizzling rain set in aftei’ the tea adjournment and hampered the Canterbury bowlers. The Wellington, men, however, reckoned without Mulcock, a tall medium paced right hander with an easy delivery, who set up an effective leg theory attack which non-piussed the Wellington batsmen to such an extent that nine wickets were down for 206 runs when stumps were drawn at 6 p.m. With a cordon of five fieldsmen close in on the leg side Mulcock sent down 21 overs, off which he captured five wickets for 53 runs, and his figures would have been better had not Menzies and Mcßae dropped catches off him. Tindall and Rice put on 58 for the first wicket for Wellington, but both went when in the thirties. The bright feature of the innings was Donnely’s 53 made in 79 minutes, which included seven boundary strokes. Rice was at the wickets for 107 minutes for 35, and Ward took 37 minutes to reach double figures. Drizzling rain from the south fell throughout New Year’s Day and prevented any play that day. The match will be continued on Monday. Scores:— CANTERBURY First Innings E. A. Gasson, b Nelson u R. E. J. Menzies, c Galichan, b Pritchard 4 D. A. N. Mcßae, c Lamason, b Pritchard 33 D. N.
