The open sprint at Wyndham attracted eleven starters, an unusually big field in this event. Gold Boa 584543 and Janet Gaynor 474-416 topped the betting figures from Double Gift 281-399. Ballad jumped oft in front of Song Boy and Gold Boa, and at the half mile, Ballad and Gold Boa were bowling along just clear of Viking, Natty, Song Boy and Double Gift, who were bunched. Gold Boa led Ballad, Viking and Janet Gaynor round the home turn, but in the run home Viking forged to the front and won by half a length from Double Gift, who came along fast to beat Gold Boa by nearly two lengths. Beam, Janet Gaynor and Natty, in line, were a length further back. In most of his previous wins Viking had been in front all the way, and it was unusual for the Lord Warden gelding to come from behind. Double Gift appeared to be rather unlucky in being checked in the running.
