CLP TO MASTER BRIERLY By Telegraph—Press Association NEW PLYMOUTH, January 1. Heavy rain fell in the morning but the afternoon was fine for the opening day of the Stratford Racing Club’s meeting. The course was in good order and there was a large attendance. The totalisator handled £23,980/10/- compared with £19,499 last year, an increase of £4481/10/-. There were only half a dozen runners for the Mimihau Handicap at Wyndham, but Sailing Lady 590-429, Nightwings 440-430, Paladino 412-396 and Barley Almond and Soliad were all in good demand. Sailing Lady and Soliad were a bit slow to begin. Barley Almond was first away, but Nightwings and Paladino soon headed her and they led into the straight. Soliad and Sailing Lady then moved up, but Paladino stayed on to win by half a length, with Sailing Lady half a length away. R. Humphries, who rode the winner with a 71b allowance, is a younger brother to G. H. Humphries and C. G. Humhphries.
