BRITAIN CREATES NEW POST British Otticial Wireless (Received January 2, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, December 31. The British Government has decided in view of the increasing strain on the personnel of the Foreign Office to create a new post in that office namely the appointment of a chief diplomatic adviser, responsible directly to the Secretary of State. The functions of the new officer will be analogous to these fulfilled by occupants of similar posts attached to other departments—chief industrial and chief economic | advisers to the Government—and will I include advising the Secretary of State upon all major questions of policy concerning foreign affairs .-emitted to him I for that purpose, and representing the j Foreign Office on any occasions either iat home or abroad, on which the Secretary of State may wish to avail I himself of his services. Sir Robert Vansittart, Under-Sec-retary of Foreign Affairs, has been selected to be the first holder of the office, and Sir Alexander Cadogan, Deputy Under-Secretary to the Foreign Office, has been appointed permanent Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs. —

HOLIDAY ENDS FOREIGN SECRETARY BACK IN LONDON British Official Wireless RUGBY, December 30. The Rt. Hon. R. A. Eden (Foreign Secretary), returned to London to-day, after a holiday in Yorkshire. He hopes to spend a few days more holiday in the south of France next week, before attending the League Council on January 17.
