THE LITTLE PARK FINE DISPLAY OF ROSES Presenting a vivid contrast to the light and dark green foliage of the splendid trees which enhance the beauty of the Little Park and motoi camp, the masses of bright-hued rose'at present in bloom are a delight *■ the eye.
In the beds near the Speechly Gates choice roses in the foreground contrast with tall lupins which again serve as a foil for the massed bloom of the climbing roses which form a delightful background. The two long narrow beds filled with roses of various descriptions lead to the rose garden proper, where there is a feast o* -Tour to delight the flower lover. Radiating from a central plot featuring some delightful varieties of standard roses, a series of plots contains •< wide and choice selection of blooms. The Red Letter Day roses make a bright patch of colour, and the Lady Hartland and Shot Silk varieties are now in full bloom, while Portadown
Fragrance do not belie their name. Earl Haig is another attractive red rose, and Sun Star, a delicate vellow to white, also arouses admiration. The beautiful bed of deep red Lord Chariemond attracts attention, also the mass of White blooms of the Frau Karl Druschki roses. Hall Mark Crimson is another popular variety, while Lord Lonsdale, a yellow rose, and the Columba bed, a mass of pink roses, also have their admirers.
Each year the rose garden at the Little Park attracts visitors from a considerable distance, and the curator, Mr H. Coombes, deserves commendation for the splendid display again this season.
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY The Geraldine Horticultural Society will introduce a new feature into the season’s programme this year when Competitive classes for roses will be held at the Geraldine Town Hall this afternoon. The roses, which must have teen grown by the exhibitor, will be classed as follow: Twelve roses, distinct colours; six roses, distinct colours; three roses, distinct colours; one rose; three trusses of polyantha roses, distinct colours; and one truss of polyantha rose. In addition, Mr H. B. Millichamp, of Ashburton, will give an address covering all phases of roes Culture. AMATEUR ATHLETICS
With the assistance of the officials of the South Canterbury Centre, the Geraldine Amateur Athletic Club will hold an inter-club sports meeting at the Geraldine Domain, commencing at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday. The programme will include the following events: A and B grade 220 yards, 880 yards and a three mile race, pole vault, long jump, discus and javelin throwing. Women’s events: 75 yards handicap, 100 yards handicap, 'ohg jump and high jump. In addition to a 100 yards Geraldine Club event, primary and secondary school ’oys 100 and 220 yards events will be held.
Mr C. Armerding trill continue his addresses on the Royal Psalms in the Geraldine Mission Hall at 7.30 to-night and to-morrow night.
The Geraldine Swimming Club will hold the official opening of the new water supply at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday.
