BRIGHTER OUTLOOK
CONDITIONS IN SPECIAL AREAS British Official Wireless RUGBY, November 24. Considerable improvement in the economic position and special areas in England and Wales, which suffered most acutely in the economic crisis of 1931, are recorded in the report of the Commissioner, Sir George Gillett. The report shows that unemployment in the areas fell by 25.6 per cent, of which only a small part is due to transference out of the areas. The greater part of the recovery, has been independent of the Government armament programme. In some cases the defence programme retarded development, as the demand for constructional materials had been so great that the erection of new factories had been delayed. The Commissioner expresses his determination to press forward the development of new industries.
