RHODES’S EXAMPLE
GERMAN’S PRACTICAL THANKS-OFFEKING United Press Association -By Electric Telegraph —Copyright (Received October 19, 8.20 p.m.) LONDON, October 19. An anonymous Hamburg merchant, as a thanks-offering for the German Rhodes scholarships at Oxford, has founded a number of annual scholarships, each valued at 3000 reichmarks, to enable students from the universities in Britain and the Empire to have a year’s study in Germany. They will be called Hanseatic Scholarships, and will be awarded without examination, but by recommendation, following an Interview. The founder hopes the scholarships will further the closer relations and understanding between Germany and Britain, and promote consciousness of European solidarity. The same donor has founded three annual prizes valued at 10,000 reichsmarks in Britain. Holland, and Scandinavia, for distinguished work in literature and arts. It is understood the first British recipient of the Shakespekcuae prize, as it is named, will be the composer, Dr. Vaughan Williams.
