FAIRLIE

SCHOOL COMMITTEE AGRICULTURAL CLUB In his report to the monthly meeting of the Fairlie District High School Committee, over which Mr H. Carlton presided, the headmaster (Mr B. F. Hayman) stated that the Minister of Education had been urging the formation of agricultural clubs, and through the agency of Mr Steele, Departmental Instructor, Fairlie had been made a centre for the district. The object of the club was to provide home competitions for children, and in so doing, to link the school with the community. This year, competitions would be arranged for calf rearing, poultry rearing. potato growing and flower growing. It was intended to hold a show in Fairlie at the end of the season, when children’s exhibits would be judged and certificates awarded. A committee of teachers and local residents had been appointed, and Mr E. F. Davison had been elected secretary. Further in his report, the headmaster stated that the roll number was 194 in the primary department, and the total was 22 with an average of 202.9. The Department was -grading schools for 1938 on the average roll number for the first four weeks of the present term, but the Fairlie average was six short of the number for a higher grade. The chairman stated that Mr G. W. Armitage, a member of the Education Board, had inspected the heating system with the Board’s assistant architect. It was considered that the system in the main building could be altered, and a heating engineer was to be asked for a report. Mr David Barnes, M.P., had visited the school on Monday. It was decided to close the primary school on October 15, to allow teachers to attend the refresher course in Timaru. Mr E. Goodwin was appointed president of the agricultural club. ATHLETIC AND CYCLE CLUB The route for the next cycle road race was fixed from the Mackenzie Council Chambers to Keenan’s Road, returning through Fairlie to Winscombe railway station, and finishing at the starting point, by a meeting of the committee of the Fairlie Cycle and Athletic Club on Tuesday night. Those present were: Messrs J. Macdonald (president), A. H. Carlton, A. Pryde, A. H. Baker, G. Dunn, H. Oldman, E. B. Taylor and A. H. Saunders. A children’s cycle race will be held while the riders in the main race are away. Donations to the funds were received from Messrs David Barnes, M.P., £1; C. J. Talbot £l/1/- and J. Barron £l. Mr G. W. Wills wrote offering a trophy valued at 10/6. The secretary of the Timaru Cycle ano Athletic Club wrote with regard to races from Timaru to Fairlie. It was decided to act on the suggestion later in the season. Points to date for the Clayton challenge cycling cup are as follows: J. Dixon 5, R. Hammond 3, A. H. Carlton 2, E. B. Taylor 2, B. Whyte 2, G. Siegert 1. GOLF L.G.U. MEDAL ROUND For a L.G.U. medal round to be played on the Strathconan links today, the draw is as follows: Seniors—Mrs J. Anniss V. Mrs E. Robertson, Miss S. M. Keeffe a bye. Juniors—Mrs J. Macdonald v. Mrs F. Geaney, Miss C. Pringle v. Miss M. McLean; Mrs H. Carlton v. Mrs D. Flanagan, Miss I. Lyons v. Mrs C. T. Whlttleston, Miss P. Collins v. Mrs P. J. Jones v. marker; juniors, Miss B. W. Redditt V. Miss J. Burt. The one-club match resulted:— Miss E. L. Jones 91 18 73 Mrs J. Macdonaldlll 34 77 Miss M. McLean 104 25 79 Mrs J. Anniss 93 14 79 Handicaps Reduced Several Fairlie golfers have brought down their handicaps this season, and form in club competitions has shown considerable improvement. The complaint has been made, however, that during a number of playing days in the season the radio broadcasts of the Springbok matches was a stronger attraction for some players than the links. Handicap reductions are shown as follows: John Gillingham .. 10-8 to 8-6 W. J. Whitehead .. 12-9 to 11-8 John Macdonald .. 13-10 to 11-8 R. J. Creighton .. .. 14-11 to 12-9 C. H. T. Miller .. .. 28-21 to 24-18 The first three won their games in the first round of the senior championship, and one at least should be playing the final 36 holes. Last year Macdonald was the winner, and because of his constant practice and steady play, he is amongst the likely finalists. John Gillingham has a natural swing, and with A. H. Gillingham, who also won his game in the first senior championship round, has one of the lowest handicaps in the club. Creighton’s strongest point is driving, and with consistency, he would be one of the leading players. This season the club’s women players have put up some very good scores. Mrs F. M. Geaney, until recently, had not lost a game. Miss Eileen L. Jones, however, beat her for the junior championship. Women members who have reduced their handicaps are:— Miss I. Annett 28 to 26 Miss P. Collins 36 to 33 Mrs P. J. Carlton .... 24 to 19 Miss E. L. Jones .... 19 to 18 Miss F. M. Geaney .... 33 to 24 Mrs J. Macdonald .... 36 to 34 CROSS-COUNTRY RACE Twenty boys entered for the Fairlie District High School’s annual crosscountry race. The course was from the school to the Allandale cutting through paddocks, and back via the main road. The d'stance was approxi-

mately three miles. Results were;— Melville Geddes (llmin)t Mac Shaw (2mln)t Colin Crampton (ISmin)3 Brian Edwards (Umin) 4 Fastest time—Melville Geddes, 18min 45sec, 1; Hugh Fraser, 18min 55sec, 2; Frank Surrldge, 19min 31sec, 3.
