Supply of Newsprint Interviewed at Whakatane yesterday regarding the uncertainty of future supplies of newsprint in Australia, Mr Horrocks, director of Whakatane Paper Mills, Ltd., said his company had at one time considered the utilisation of Australian timbers, but was satisfied newsprint could be made more economically in New Zealand, which had in its softwoods plantations an unrivalled source of suitable raw material. Newspaper proprietors in New Zealand were not blind to the advantages of having newsprint made locally. If this could be done without a tariff, they would, he felt sure, support the proposals of the Whakatane Company in preference to linking up with the Australian project which did not guarantee a permanent supply in the event of hostilities or shipping difficulties.
