SUNDAY TRADING

APPEAL BY TIMARU PRESBYTERY QUARTERLY MEETING An appeal to church members to refrain from Sunday trading was contained in the following resolution introduced by the public Questions committee. at yesterday’s meeting of Timaru Presbytery: “That the Presbytery of Timaru being convinced by personal observation and by trustworthy testimony that there is considerable breaking of the law with regard to Sunday trading as customers are commonly to be seen coming out of shops with their purchases on Sundays, draws the attention of Presbyterian people to this fact with a view to their being careful to refrain from participation in such practices.”

Present:—The Revs. J. Baird (Moderator), W. J. Couling, J. S. Strang, A. F. Sutherland, W. McNeur, A. McNeur, E. L. Williams, F. H. Wilkinson, J. B. Kirk, K. J. Griffiths, A. Begg, J. S. Young, W. F. Nichol (clerk), Messrs N. McGregor, J. Caskey, G. Stewart, H. Maxwell, J. Cleland, G. R. McGregor, A. J. Tucker, C. D. Gibson, T. Hamilton, W. L. Hay, and J. N. Reid. The feeling was that such a resolution was as far as the church could go, at the present juncture, said the Rev. F. H. Wilkinson, on behalf of the committee. They had a responsibility for Presbyterian people and their conduct and it was a pity that some of them were wittingly or unwittingly breaking the law. Most of them, he took it, did refrain from Sunday trading but others did not.

The motion was seconded by the Rev. A. Begg and carried unanimously.

Assembly Representations

The Revs. A. F. Sutherland, W. F. Nichol, J. B. Kirk, A. McNeur, R. J. Griffiths, and J. Andrews were appointed the Presbytery’s representatives at the General Assembly to be held in Auckland in November.

It was agreed that the following sessions appoint representatives: Albury, Chalmers, St. Paul’s, Trinity, St. Andrews and Waimate.

The Rev. W. F. Nichol was appointed the Presbytery's representative on the Assembly’s Committee on Standing Committees, and the Rev. A. F. Sutherland was appointed the representative on the Committee on Records.

The following reports of visitation commissions were presented: Pleasapt Point (Rev. J. S. Strang), Orari (Rev. W. J. Couling), and Morven (Rev. R. J. Griffiths). The Rev. T. Riddell was nominated as moderator of the Assembly for 193839.

Reporting on behalf of the Students’ Committee, the Rev. J. S. Strang read the comments of the examiners who had considered the work of Mr J. Freeman, a candidate for ministerial license. As one of the examiners had said, continued Mr Strang, Mr Freeman was a man of theological intelligence, and as a result of the reports of the examiners he had no hesitation in recommending Mr Freeman for license. Provisional arrangements were made for the licensing of Mr Freeman on October 20 and Presbytery’s congratulations on the success of his course and best wishes for the success of his ministry were offered.
