CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT FOURSOMES PLAYED HORNABROOK HAS ANOTHER WIN By Telegraph—Press Association HAMILTON, October 4. Consistency was the keynote of J. P. Hornabrook’s success in partnering W. Horne to victory in the Amateur championship foursomes which were decided over 36 holes to-day. This gave Hornabrook his second victory at the tournament, and the pair combined well to return the excellent figures of 74 and 73. There were several excellent scores in the event, and the competition over the last round was keen. The previous title holders, J. Mortland and G. Ward, played two good rounds, but their tally of 80 in the final 18 holes eliminated them from any prospects of obtaining the title. The weather was fine and the links in good order. Impressive golf is being played by J. P. Hornabrook, the new open champion. and his consistency at present augurs well for his being the favourite for the amateur crown, which he is defending for the third successive year. On the other hand the form of Hattersley, who recently has been rated as the third best amateur golfer in Australia, has not been so consistent at the tournament but rather characterised by brilliant flashes. Hattersley did not play so well this afternoon. and in company with Cutler needed 78 to complete the final round. Playing excellent golf this afternoon in the second round of the professional championship foursomes, C. C. Clements enhanced his prospects of retaining the professional title which he annexed for the first time last year. Clements has not had a great deal of golf this season. He experienced trouble with the greens at New Plymouth last year, and it was not until he overcame the strange nature of the surfaces that he leaped into the limelight to win the title. The champion’s shots have been impressive right throughout the tournament, and his tee and fairway work has been practically without a blemish. If the greens do not present difficulties to him again to-morrow, he should have a good chance of retaining his title. Basil J. Smith, junr., also is in fine form, and it was his excellent golf today that enabled him to partner Clements to victory in the foursomes championship. In all departments he played correct strokes. Morning Play A rather surprising lapse of form was experienced by A. J. Shaw in the first round of the professional foursomes when he played a game not suggestive that he will be one of the most likely contenders for the professional championship. Shaw has not been playing the best golf during the tournament so far, although he has two good rounds to his credit. However, he is a formidable match player, and with Murray out of the field, he will be difficult, and by the concluding stages he may be back to his usual consistency again. Norrie Bell, who partnered Shaw to victory in the professional foursomes last year, has displayed nothing of his past form in the earlier part of the tournament. To-day the pair did not combine well in scoring 80. In the first round Bell was disappointing with his approach work, while Shaw had difficulty in judging his seconds to the pin. Murray played good golf again, and E. J. Moss, who must be considered as one of the most probable of the contestants for the professional title, also played consistently, making only one mistake, and that was in the rough. The pair scored 78 in the first round. A. H. Dyke and J. Lambie harmonised exceptionally well to head the first round of the professional championship foursomes. While Lambie played, perhaps, a little better of the golf, the players were both right on their form. They missed with very little. The holder of the professional championship, C. C. Clements, had few difficulties to contend with in the first round. The best of the early cards in the amateur foursomes was returned by J. P. Hornabrook and W. Horne. They both played very steady golf with Hornabrook maintaining the consistent form he has shown over the past week. A definite recovery to form has been shown by the Australian amateur, Hattersley, and it is now evident that he has conquered local conditions. He was partnered to-day by Cutler, and but for the latter failing on the greens and with his chip shots, their card of 77 would have been much better. Hattersley appears certain to be a very strong contender for the amateur crown. The results were:—
