DOMINION WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

MISS J. HORWELL IN FINAL EIGHT By Telegraph—Press Association NAPIER, October 4. The fourth round of the New Zealand Women’s Golf Championship was played at Napier to-day. Despite the fact that she was handicapped by a bad cold, Mrs S. Morpeth gave an excellent display of solid golf, to beat Mrs J. M. Alison by two up and one. They were all square after seven holes had been played. Mrs Morpeth gradually gained the upper hand and was three up with four to play. Mrs Alison was one short at the fourteenth, however, and looked like winning the next when she laid Mrs Morpeth a dead stymie. However, Mrs Morpeth played a brilliant chip shot, sinking the ball for a half. The sixteenth was halved in five, while at the seventeenth Mrs Alison sank a 20-foot putt for a three. Mrs Morpeth had a two-foot putt to win the match, and with this she made no mistakes. Miss P. Helean was in excellent form this morning, the first eight holes being completed in one over par. She was only one up against Mrs D. Stout, but concluding with a good display, she forged ahead in the second half to win the match by six and five. Another comparatively easy victory this morning was that secured by Mrs D. Wilson in her match with Miss E. Upton. Mrs Wilson played strongly throughout, and the match finished in her favour by six up and five. Mrs Hollis in her match with Mrs Chrisp, had a cloee call. Mrs Chrisp, after being four down, staged a great recovery, to reduce the lead to one down after the sixteenth and seventeenth were halved in fours, and the eighteenth in four. At the last hole Mrs Chrisp lipped the hole for a three to keep the game alive. Miss Hutton, of Australia, maintained her excellent form in her match with Miss Beadel, of Christchurch. Miss Hutton went out in 39, playing nice golf, to be three up on her opponent. However, Miss Beadel played very steadily on the second half, to gradually reduce her opponent’s lead, and after the sixteenth was played, Miss Hutton was dormie two. The seventeenth was halved in well-played threes, giving the match to Miss Hutton, two up and one to play. Brilliant Form. Mrs Fullerton-Smith was unlucky to be off her game, and to find Miss Horwell playing at the top of her form. Miss Horwell played brilliant golf, to win the match six up and five. Great interest was taken in this game by the spectators on the course, as both these players are likely to represent New Zealand in the Tasman Cup match this week. Miss Betts, of Nelson, was in brilliant form in her match with Mrs A. C. McKllop, of Christchurch. Miss Betts went out in par figures, to be six up on her opponent. So excellently was Miss Betts playing, that she was only able to get halves at the fourth, sixth and ninth. The game finished at the twelfth hole, where Miss Betts secured a well-played four to win eight up and seven. The winner’s card on the first nine holes read: 4,4, 4,4, 4,4, 3,5, 5 —37. Playing the steadiest golf she has produced so far in this tournament, Miss S. Tolhurst gained an early lead over Miss C. Wilson, and was two up at the seventh, after being robbed of a certain win at the sixth by a dead stymie when only 12 inches from the hole. Three down at the turn, Miss Wilson turned on fireworks with her putter, sinking twe 20-footers at the tenth and the eleventh. However, Miss Tolhurst was equal to the occasion, sinking a 12-footer for a half at the tenth, and hitting the back of the cup from the edge of the green -at the eleventh, both being halved. Miss Wilson putted three at the next, Miss Tolhurst sinking an eight-footer for a win, to te four up with six to play. Fighting back, Miss Wilson took the next hole in four, and sank another 20-foct putt to win the fourteenth. Miss Tolhurst retaliated at the fifteenth, sinking a chip shot for a birdie three to win the hole and become dormie three. Miss Tolhurst made no mistake at the sixteenth, taking the hole in five to win the match four up and two to play. To-day’s Results. Mrs Hollis beat Mrs D. Chrisp, 1 up. Miss E. M.
