NEWS AND NOTES

The claim that he was the most “cosmopolitan” M.P. in Auckland was made by Mr F. W. Schramm when speaking at the official opening of Auckland’s new transport station. He explained that as a result of the work of the Boundaries Commission recently that part of the city on which the transport terminal was situated would not be in his electorate. Auckland East, at the next election. Instead he would have portion of' Devonport, and the commissioners had thrown in Rangitoto for good measure, and Waiheke as well.

In conjunction with the Roman Catholic centennial celebrations to be held at Auckland and Hokianga in February and March of next year, it is intended to compile a Catholic register, to be known as a grand centenary register. It is hoped the volume will be a complete record of every Catholic in New Zealand at the time of the centenary.

“In the present state of tribal psychology in the world to-day the only thing that remains is the arbitrament of force,” said Mr Frank Milner in an address to the Canterbury Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association in Christchurch. “Collective security has broken down, and there is likely to be an electric spark in Europe anywhere to-day. There have been 210 pacts signed in Europe in the last 16 years, and every one of them was brokers before the ink was dry. As for international morality, it is a seething ocean of hypocrisy. We must look at deeds, not words, in these days. You have only to look at British rearmament, house to house canvass for scrap iron, the supplying of gas masks. Britain has had to be realistic and to face the challenge of Fascism to democracy.”
