EXPORTS FOR JULY

INCREASE IN VALUE An increase of £145,000 in the value of exports during July compared with the level in the corresponding month last year is shown by preliminary figures issued by the Customs Department in Wellington. Commodity exports, expressed in New Zealand currency, were valued at £4.825,000, compared with £4.680,000 in July last year. The imports, also expressed in New Zealand currency, were £1.314,000 higher in value than in July last year, the figures being £4,844,000 compared with £3,530,000. There is a particularly impressive contrast with 1933, when imports for July were no more than £1,695,000 in value. Imports exceeded exports in value for the month by £19,000. An excess of imports was recorded in one other July during the previous four years, in 1934. At this season of the year, a slack period for exports, and in normal times, with import business brisk, an excess of imports cannot be regarded as abnormal. The figure for July in the past five years are:— Exports Imports Excess July £ £ £ 1933 .. 3,377,000 1.695,000 1,682,000 1934 .. 2,851,000 2,667,000 16.000’ 1935 .. 3.218.000 2.947.000 271,000 1936 .. 4.680.000 3.530.000 1,150,000 1937 .. 4,825.000 4,844,000 19,000’ • Excess of imports. For the first seven months of the calendar year exports were £8,00,000 higher than for the corresponding period of last year. In the same period imports increased by £7,000.000. The yisible commodity balance is roughly £1,000,000 greater this year. A comparison of the seven months ended July in the past five years is as follows: — Jan.- Exports Imports Excess July £ £ £ 1933 26,739,000 14,329,000 12,410,000 1934 34,349,000 16,623,000 17,726,000 1935 30.327,000 -19,665,000 10,662,000 1936 46,925,000 30,571,000 16,354,000 Specie exported in July—not included in the previous totals—was valued at £5OO. The imports for the months were valued at £6OO. For the seven months to July the exports were valued at £3500 and the imports at £96,981.
