Five players share the lead at the end of the first round of the Australian open golf championship, which is being staged on the Australian Club links at Kensington. But for an unfortunate occurrence Nettlefold, the Tasmanian champion, would have led the field outright. He played the wrong ball to the first green, and was penalised two strokes. He had a stroke round of 71. The leadens at the end of the first round are: McKay, Rae Cook, Rufus Stewart, F. Bolger 72; Nettlefold, G. Naismith, Von Nida, Bourke, 73; Boorer, Booth, Bradshaw, W. Campbell, Petterson, Walker, H. Williams, Wishart, Harvey, 74. The others include: Ferrier, C. Gray, E. Cremin, 75; W. Holder 76; Whitton, Keane, Richardson 77: Hattersley, W. Bolger and Ward (New Zealand) 79; Godby (New Zealand) 97. Ward played excellent tee shots, but early was astray with approaches, making several visits to the bunkers. Later he missed half a dozen short putts but Godby started with eight at a par four hole and thereafter played completely without confidence being frequently inthe rough. He also took three putts on a number of greens. Jim Ferrier disappointed, being erratic with his irons.
