ARUNDEL

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

The monthly meeting of the Arundel Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday in the Howard Hall. Mrs G. Wooding presided over a fair attendance of members and visitors. It was decided to enter in the floral display to be held in October. Mrs A. G. Brown of Geraldine gave a most comprehensive talk on the Dominion Federation meeting, a vote of thanks being accorded her. On the motion of Mrs H. Black, seconded by Mrs R. Johnston it was decided to start a library. £1 worth of books to be purchased. Mrs Brown judged the competitions which resulted as follows.—Vase <.f spring flowers (decorative): Miss H. Pratt 1, Mrs Black 2. Three oatcakes: Mrs Black 1, Miss H. Pratt 2. Best bloom: Miss H. Pratt 1. Hostesses for the day were Mesdames Paterson and Pratt, Miss Emilie McCully. EUCHRE SOCIAL There was a good attendance at the fortnightly social held on Saturday night by the Arundel hall committee. Mrs O. Brown and Mrs Heney tied for the ladies’ prize and in the play off Mrs Heney proved the winner. Mr K. Rose and Mr T. Leary tied for the men’s prize and in the play off Mr K. Rose proved the winner. Consolation prizes went to Mrs Pithie and Mr D. Tinkler. Music for dancing was supplied by Mr Chapman and Mr Frank Heney was | M.C. MINIATURE RIFLES At the weekly shoot held on Monday plght, Mr E, Bateman was the winner I of Morrison Bros, trophy. Following I were the scores —M. Tavener 78, R ; Baker 76, A. Lewis 76, G. Tinkler 64, W. Kerr 59, | T. Leary 51. PERSONAL Mrs T. McCleary, Timaru, is the guest of Mrs C. McMaster, Arundel. Mrs Murray and Miss Griffin, Dunedin, who have been the guests of Miss A. Fraser, “The Triangle,” Arundel, j have returned south. P.W.M.U. MEETING At the monthly meeting of the P.W.M.U., a presentation of a beautiful crystal honey jar was made to Miss Lila Ambler who is shortly to be married. The president. Mrs Reid spoke of Miss Ambler’s high quality and of the valuable work done for the Bible Class and P.W.M.U. Mrs Sim then presented Miss Ambler with a bouquet and endorsed Mrs Reid’s remarks. Miss Ambler suitably responded. GIFT EVENING On Wednesday evening friends and well-wishers gathered in the Arundel Sunday School Hall to honour Miss L. Ambler and Mr M. Hampton who are shortly to be married. The evening took the form of a social, the time being spent in playing games and competitions, interspersed with items. Mrs Reid (Orari) sang two songs and Miss Shirley Reid and Mr Jack McComb recited. The Winers of the competitions were Mrs S. Upritchard, Miss S. Reid and Mr K. Rose. After supper, Mr Colin Flower, on behalf of the Arundel Sunday School ex-pupils, presented Miss Ambler with a beautiful basket of flowers and Mr M. Hampton wjth a buttonhole. Mr Love spoke on behalf of the church and asked the guests of honour to accept a fireside companion. I nacola set and a crystal jelly dish and wished the couple the best of luck. Mr Reid endorsed Mr Love’s remarks and spoke on the way Miss Ambler had helped in the charch and asked them to accept the kitchen evening presents.

Miss Ambler thanked everyone for the beautiful gifts and kindly remarks. Mr Hampton also replied. Those present were Mr and Mrs Reid, Mr and Mrs Ambler, Mr and Mrs Love, Mr and Mrs P. Russel, Mr and Mrs I. Kelland, Mr and Mrs Sim, Mrs Paterson, Mrs Upritchard, Mrs Morris, Mrs South, Mr and Mrs Ashby, Misses L. and C. Ambler. M. Galletly, H. Pratt, E. McCully. A. Fraser, E.
