HOUSING IN BOROUGH INTEREST IN ADELAIDE SCHEME Because it is likely that the recent housing survey will disclose a number of houses in the borough below the standard set down by the Government, the Borough Council has become interested in the housing scheme adopted in Adelaide under which dwellings are being erected at a cost of £4OO and are let to tenants at a rental of 12/6 weekly. The Adelaide authorities have been written to and asked to supply details. “There is more need for houses which can be let for a moderate rental rather than those the Government are building at 30/- a week," said the Mayor (Mr G. Dash) yesterday. “A man who can afford to pay 30/- a week can build his own house.” A block of land in Wall street, between Lower High Street and Manchester Park, has been offered to the Government by a private owner for the building of State houses. The Council is at present engaged in connecting a house recently placed in this street with the sewer.

SPRINGBOK FOOTBALLERS An invitation for the Springboks to spend an afternoon in Waimate during their stay at Timaru has been extended by the Mayor (Mr G. Dash) to the South Canterbury Rugby Union. The visiting footballers will be in Timaru for some days, and It is suggested that a short visit to Waimate could be easily arranged. DRAMA FESTIVAL SUGGESTED A suggestion that a drama festival be held in Waimate in October has been made to Mr D. Newall, convener of the recently formed provisional committee to organise a drama centre in the district. Mr Newall, it is understood, will shortly call the committee together to consider the suggestion. BOROUGH REVALUATION Tire number of objections received to the recent revaluation of properties in the borough has been remarkably small. As the Court has just finished sitting in Auckland, it is not known when the objections will be heard. MINIATURE RIFLES Highest scores at the weekly shoot of the Makikihi Miniature Rifle Club were:—W. Trezise 80; H. Trezise 79; W. Tiffin, R. Alexander, G. Park, J. Slattery 78; S. Trezise, D. Lynch, T.
