PROFESSOR PICCARD’S FAILURE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, July 18. A message from Rochester (Minneapolis) states that Professor Piccard took off for the stratosphere in a unique gondola, supported by 80 tiny balloons. His aircraft, however, was destroyed by fire, but Professor Piccard is reported not to have been injured. Fuller Particulars The flaming aircraft crashed on a hillside, after attaining an altitude of 11,000 feet. The instruments were saved. Professor Piccard asserted that the flight was experimentally successful, and proved conclusively the feasibility of the 2000 balloon plan. His face and hands were scratched in the swift descent through a patch of trees in order to avoid plunging Into the Mississippi River. Professor Piccard Intends to make a second experimental flight before attempting a record.
