SPRINGBOKS IN AUSTRALIA
ANOTHER RUNAWAY VICTORY United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 30, 11.40 p.m.) NEWCASTLE, June 30. Playing a Newcastle fifteen, which included two Sydney players, McLauchlin and Turnbull, who have represented New South Wales in recent years, and also three other former State players, the Springboks dominated play after the first ten minutes during which seven penalties w’ere awarded against them. The South Africans won by 58 points to 8. They scored 16 tries, only five being converted by F. Turner, who had many difficult kicks. Half the tries were scored by the forwards, which fact Is evidence of the manner in which they backed up, especially from cross kicks by the wingers. In spite of the fact that the pack was deprived of the back row after the left W'inger A. B. Broodryk was injured shortly before the interval, and M. Van der Berg withdrawn from the forwards to play on the wing, the ball was won in the scrums and line-outs with monotonous ■frequency, and having overcome the early tendency to infringe the rules, the Springboks’ backs and the heavy forwards combined and handled the ball splendidly, crushing their lighter opponents. It was their fifth successive match on a muddy ground, heavy rain having fallen in the morning, but the Springboks were obviously keen to create a good Impression and threw the ball about, their tactics being a contrast with those of Saturday’s test. G. P. Lochner, A. Harris, W. Jennings, and K. Marton, who had previously played only once on the tour, all shaped well, especially Lochner the utility back who, playing at half-back, made several clever thrusts, S. Hofmeyer at centre, and Turner, who started at full-back but in the second half moved to the right wing, were also attractive backs. Boy Louw and T. Sheriff were grand forwards. The tourists had a crop of minor injuries. Broodryk bruised a shoulder muscle and Williams who changed places with Turner in the second half, suffered a slight leg injury, but the only serious casualty at present is B. Du Tbit. Tries were scored for the winners by W. F. Bergh (3), Broodryk (3), Louw (2), Turner (2), D. O. Williams, Marton, Sheriff, Van der Berg, L. Barbrow and Jennings. Turner converted five tries. The Springboks departed for Brisbane to-night. ENGLISH SOCCER TEAM WARM WELCOME IN AUSTRALIA United Pres.® As«nclptlnn —Rv Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 30, 10.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 30.
