URGENT APPEAL TO PRESIDENT OUTRAGES IN STEEL INDUSTRY THOUSANDS THROWN OUT OF WORK United Press Association—Bv Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 30, 5.5 p.m.l) WASHINGTON, June 30 President Roosevelt, in a press conference, when asked to comment on the strike crisis said: The .general opinion of the country is that “there is a plague in both your houses,” which the White House spokesman interpreted as a plague of extremists on both sides—those who want violence and those who will not negotiate. Challenge to the President The Mayor of Johnstown (Mr Shields) has telegraphed to President Roosevelt: “It seems preposterous that J. L. Lewis has your support in his ruthless activities. If Lewis does not withdraw his highly objectionable representatives, the people of Johnstown may take the law into their own hands.” An emergency meeting of the City Council summoned James Mark and C. Jones, leaders of the steel and railway strike and warned them that they remain in Johnstown at their own risk. EXPLOSIONS IN STEEL FACTORY SERIOUS OUTBREAKS OF LAWLESSNESS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, June 29. A message from Johnstown states that two mysterious explosions cut off the .main water supply to the Bethlehem steel plant, and forced the suspension of operations in the middle of the “Back to Work” Movement, which the company claimed had restored operations to normal. Investigators said that dynamite had apparently been placed under the stone water tunnels in the mountains a few miles from the city. The blast shattered the windows in homes within a quarter of .a mile radius. There was no one injured. Strike leaders denied responsibility, and said..they deplored, the incident. Two hundred .soldier? have been assigned, to guard the highways and search all motor vehicles. A. m 'kary investigation jjas been ordered at the plant, which is expected to shut down for a fortnight.

WASHINGTON, June 29 The President has issued a budgetary statement that the public debt on June 6, will total 36,400,000,000 dollars. The deficit for 1937 will be 2,670,000,000 dollars.
