BOROUGH VALUATION FIGURES INCREASE OF £6,625 An increase of £6,625 in the capital value of property in the Temuka borough is revealed in the valuation summary for the year, the total valuation being £378,815. The rateable values have increased by £8.255, stated the Town Clerk (Mr L. Butters) yesterday, but the value of properties exempt from rates has decreased by £1,630. The amount of the net increase represents the value of the buildings erected and improvements made during the year. WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED RESERVES TO BE PLANTED Further authority for the employment of men under Scheme No. 5 for the clearing of ground in preparation for planting trees has been received from the Employment Division of the Department of Labour. Sixteen men have started work on the clearing of land in the southeastern portion of the Domain and afterwards they will transfer to the sanitation reserve near the Temuka river where a portion is to be planted. After the ground has been prepared the men are to undertake planting, and it is expected that from 10 to 12 weeks’ work will be available. A DRY MONTH June was a compartaively dry month, the rainfall up to last evening being one inch. Rain fell on five days, the heaviest recording taking place on June 15 when 41 points was registered. The total for the year so far is 11.37 inches as compared with 16.90 for the first six months of 1936. The total for June 1936 was 1.64 inches. GOLF MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS The draw for the first round of the men’s championships which will be played on Saturday, is as follows: Senior—G. H. Low v. L. M. Johnson, W. McGillen v. A. S. Mclnnes, W. Pearse v. F. A. ScannelL Byes were drawn by T. B. Edwards, A. D. Todd, R. N. Clark, J. T. Smart and ft C. Hitchcock. Junior—G. H. Gilbert v. C. T. Rix, W. P. Noble v. R. Spillane, S. C. Glew v. A. A. Grant, Eliot V. C. G. Stringer, G. Good v E. C. Brittenden. W. Shand, R. A. Colville and M. M. Reynolds drew byes. L. M. Johnson won the week-end bogey competition with a net score of 1 down. BADMINTON Members Of the Temuka Badminton Club, W. Ives, M. Nicholas, I. Macfarlane, H. Hitchcock, G. Good and R. G. Simpson, played the first match of the season on their home court on Tuesday evening. The Allenton Club (Ashburton) were the visitors and they secured a decisive win by 8 games to 3. although a number of the games lost were closely contested. At the close of play Mr L. Crooks thanked Temuka for the game and extended an invitation to visit Ashburton. Mr Hitchcock replied for Temuka. BIBLE CLASSES SOCIAL EVENINGS HELD One hundred and fifty Bible Class members, senior scholars, Sunday School teachers and visitors from Cave and Pleasant Point were present at the fortnightly social of the combined Presbyterian Bible Classes which took the form of a “Scotch” evening. Mr J. Macauley was in the chair and extended a welcome to the visitors.

The evening was spent in games and competitions. A competition for the best Scotch air played on the piano was won by Miss C. Brown, of Cave. Items were given as follows: —Bagpipe solo, Mr H. Lyon; recitation. Miss D. Denison; duet, George Mackenzie and Ray Mallett. At the conclusion of the evening Mr C. D. Hopklnson, Cave, and Mr J. S. Skinner, Pleasant Point, on behalf of the visitors thanked the Temuka Bible Classes for entertaining them. Mr G. A. Davey, leader oj the Bible Classes, said they were pleased to have them, visit Temuka and later on perhaps Temuka would return the compliment and repay the visit. The prayers w’ere led by the Rev. W. F. Nichol and Rev. W. McNeur, of Pleasant Point. A lantern lecture entitled “Travels and Triumph of the Bible in Many Lands,” was delivered in the Parish Hall on Tuesday evening by Mr A. C. Mark, provincial secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society. The Rev. L. A. Barnes presided and introduced the speaker. A collection was taken up in aid of the Society. WAITEA REBEKAH LODGE A demonstration of making wool rugs was given by Sisters Downes and Arnst at the fortnightly meeting of the Waitea Rebekah Lodge. N.G. Sister E. J. Scott presided. One candidate for membership was elected. Sister L. E. Scowei . J.P.G. reported on the recent visit to the Waimate combined lodges’ dance.
