FAIRLIE
MAN STILL MISSING SEARCH BY POLICE So far all efforts to trace Andrew Matthews, who disappeared from the Gladstone Grand Hotel on June 5, have been unsuccessful. The police have information to the effect that the missing man purchased poison from a store in Fairlie on the day of his disappearance, and signed the book as “M. Andrews,” the name he gave at the hotel, but state that such a purchase need not have any connection with his disappearance. Constable A. Mackintosh has completed an extensive search of the Opihi riverbed and other secluded areas around the town. Matthews, who left the hotel without taking his luggage and overcoat, evidently made an effort to scratch his correct name off all his belongings, and except for one receipt found in the corner of a pocket, removed traces of his identity fairly thoroughly. On the day he left, he did not return to the hotel for lunch, and as far as can be ascertained was last seen in the main street about mid-day. He was not married. During his stay at the hotel, he was suffering from influenza. FROST BREAKS V,'BATHER THREATENING With the sky thickly overcast and the weather threatening, the series of severe frosts in the Mackenzie County broke in most districts yesterday morning. Before the milder conditions reached Tekapo, however, a frost of 25 degrees was recorded. A thaw was noticeable at Allandale and Sherwood Downs in the afternoon. Should the change in the weather bring more snow, a serious position would probably result as with the ground frozen hard, worse frosts would be likely. CYCLE AND ATHLETIC CLUB DONATION TO BAND FUND At a meeting of the Fairlie Cycle ana Athletic Club committee on Tuesday night, it was decided to subscribe £l/1/- to the fund started by the Council to assist the Mackenzie Highland Pipe Band to attend the contest in Palmerston North. A donation of 10/6 was also made to the King George V. Memorial Fund. The secretary (Mr E. B. Taylor) reported that on June 16, the club had a credit balance of £45/11/7, and after payments in connection with the recent presentation of trophies and smoke concert had been made, the credit would be £3B/1/9. Since the banking account had only been opened in March, 1936, he considered that such a substantial credit reflected a very satisfactory position. A vote of appreciation was passed to the secretary and others who had so successfully helped with the smoke concert. In order to make an early start next season, it was decided to call the annual meeting about the middle of September. MINIATURE RIFLES The following were the scores at the Fairlie Mipiature Rifle Club’s weekly shoot: V. Braddick 77, J. Cassie 76, J. Thompson 73, W. H. Cook 72, W. Dorman 72, A. Shute 72, D. Mcßae 72, E. Pike 72, R. Fergusson 71. The weekly button was won by V. Braddtck, and the trophy by J. Cassie.
