AFFILIATION WITH LABOUR PARTY DEBATED Whether the 9000 members of the Post and Telegraph Association should affiliate with the Labour Party is being discussed by the branches of the Association In each centre. It is understood that there is a wide divergence of opinion on the matter among the members, many of whom believe that such an association of public servants should steer clear of anything savouring of political affiliations. The question was debated at a meeting of the Timaru P. and T. Association on Tuesday, and the discussion' showed the meeting to be sharply divided on the question. The Timaru Association embraces the whole of South Canterbury. The views of each centre will take the form of a remit, which, will come before the Dominion Conference of the Association next November. Members of the Post and Telegraph Department are organised in two groups, the second of which, the P. and T. Officers’ Guild, has a membership of about 600. It was formed as a result of a breakaway of members who opposed any agitation against the continuation of salary reductions during the financial depression. The 9000 membership of the P. and T. Association includes almost every employee who is not a member of the Guild.
