A BAD RECORD
GAOL FOR FALSE PRETENCES By Telegraph—Pres? Association DUNEDIN, June 30 “For a young man, accused has an exceptionally bad record of false pretences, of something like 30 charges," stated Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., this morning, in sentencing Elwood Cuthbertson (28), to six months’ imprisonment, for issuing two valueless cheques, of £lO each to the licensee of the Gladstone Hotel, who knew his parents, and for which reason she had accepted the cheques. Accused was later arrested in Christchurch. The police, in announcing the long list of convictions, stated that this was the man who was sentenced two years ago for tobacco sale frauds. Counsel stated that accused came from a respectable family. When quite young he had received two substantial legacies, which completely turned his head. He began to keep racehorses, and lived in great luxury, which led to his downfall.
