W.C.T.U.
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in the Sailors' Rest. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mrs Valentine, and also with Mrs Wallach ill the death of her son. Arrangements were made for the visit of Mrs Heitt, Dominion president, on July 15. A pleasing ceremony was the presentation of a long service badge to Mrs Miller. The president welcomed two new r. embers, Mrs Bruce and Miss Simpson. It being “White Ribbon” day, Mrs McAllister made a strong appeal for more subscribers. Mrs McAllister outlined the history of the “White Ribbon” the official paper of the W.C.T.U. The following resolutions sent from the Dominion Convention were adopted:— “That this convention reaffirms its demand for the employment of women police.” “That legislation be passed to restrict the sale of contraceptives to qualified chemists, and to make the sale to persons under 18 years of age illegal.” A short musical programme was contributed by Misses Head, Holdgate and Ellis. Mrs A. Wheeler was the accompanist. A vote of thanks to the performers was carried by acclamation. Mrs Woodward of the Sailors’ Rest reported that three overseas vessels had been in port during the month, 98 men paying about 390 visits to the rest. A Sunday evening tea and service was held for the men of the Tairoa.
